Students from the BG/BRG Judenburg come from all social classes and also from social minorities. As the school is the only academic grammar school in the area, students do not only come from the city of Judenburg, but also from remote rural areas and have to travel a long way to get to school each day. The students start the BG/BRG Judenburg at the age of ten. Lower grade students arrive at the school with a wide range of different skills and little language skills. In the lower grades ISCED 2 (grades 1-4) students can select either an extra second foreign language or they can focus on their studies in sciences. After four years some students continue attending higher grades ISCED 2 (grades 5-8) and finish school with the leaving certificate at the age of 18. From grades 5-8 students focus on different areas of subjects (Music and Arts, Natural Sciences, Languages and IT). Many of those students are highly motivated to participate in international and EU projects.

The main target group for this JM learning initiative is students from level ISCED 2 grade 5 – 6 (aged 14-16). Some of them are very interested in EU based matters as they participated in lower grades in eTwinning activities. In personal talks with teachers, they have shown great interest in EU activities and want to experience Europe in a more sophisticated way and want to actively create and understand Europe. Additionally, this initiative will also motivate students with fewer opportunities and special demands (financial, social, behavioural, cultural) to participate in the project in order to offer them a chance to overcome their difficulties and participate actively in social life. However, also highly motivated and especially gifted students should get the chance to participate in this learning initiative to enlarge their skills, knowledge and abilities.

In consultation between the EU school coordination team, the principle and the administration a reduced number of teachers is selected as another target group of this initiative. These teachers are selected according to the professional expertise as they all have university degrees in a subject like History, Geography, Languages etc. and in pedagogy. Other criteria for their selection are the obvious interest and motivation in an EU based subject and the will to replace outdated teaching methodologies with the implementation of innovative, digital, communicative and EU based teaching scenarios.

Benefits:

  • Increase of students’ and teachers’ motivation to participate in EU activities

  • Increase of students’ professional knowledge and skills in relation to EU

  • Raise of EU literacy of students and teachers

  • Increase of digitalisation at school

  • Expansion of schools’, teachers’ and students’ network in relation to the EU

  • Increase of experience in dealing with EU, Erasmus+, Jean Monnet projects

  • Professional development of teachers concerning EU

  • Students gain certificates (Europass/Youthpass) after successfully completing the modules which is of great importance for their future career prospects.
